D2L Brightspace

Current status

RFM has verified Brightspace staging for Dynamic Registration, instructor Deep Linking placement, learner launch and relaunch, and first/retake final-grade return. New institution connections are enabled only through an explicit RFM-controlled pilot, with public production registration and enablement remaining unavailable.

Prepare for a pilot

A school preparing for an approved pilot should use a Brightspace partner or test site first.

• Brightspace administrator access to Manage Extensibility.
• One sandbox organization unit and one test learner.
• Permission to create a Standard LTI Advantage registration and deployment.
• Permission to enable Assignment and Grade Services for the registration and deployment.
• A plan to keep test and production registrations separate.

Dynamic registration for an approved staging pilot

From Manage Extensibility, choose Dynamic registration and paste the one-time registration URL shown in the authenticated RFM institution console. Complete the provider confirmation, return to RFM, and choose the exact Brightspace staging environment covered by the institution’s approved onboarding plan.

   Review and enable the new registration in Brightspace.

   Create or confirm its deployment if Brightspace did not create one during registration.

   Share the deployment only to the approved test organization unit.

   Return to the RFM institution console and save the Brightspace deployment ID if requested.

   Verify the environment before any course placement or learner launch.

Verified Brightspace setup differences

The shared RFM authorization, identity, access, immutable-version, and Player-session rules are the same as Canvas. Only the Brightspace administrator screens and link-placement steps differ.

• Use Dynamic registration for an approved staging pilot, or Standard registration when the console directs you to the manual fallback.
• Leave Send Institution Role disabled.
• Enable Assignment and Grade Services with the standard Line Item and Score permissions; do not enable NRPS, Platform Notification Service, or Asset Processor.
• The registration includes the standard Content Area placement metadata used by the RFM investigation picker.
• Ensure the synthetic learner role is gradeable in the approved organization unit.
• For Deep Linking, choose only an RFM-approved investigation and allow Brightspace to create the content topic.
• For the manual fallback, use a Basic Launch link with Open as External Resource enabled and the exact case-sensitive rfm_resource_link_id value supplied for the approved immutable investigation.
• Share only to the approved test organization unit during a sandbox proof.

What Brightspace receives

For the approved staging proof, RFM creates or reuses one 100-point grade item for the placed resource link and returns the learner’s latest completed final-assessment percentage. A retake updates the same item with a newer result rather than creating a duplicate.

• Grade item: Red Flag Mania Final Assessment.
• Status: completed and fully graded.
• Scope: one overall final-assessment score only.
• Instructor comments are not written or replaced by RFM.
• Individual exercise, investigation, and activity scores are not sent.

One connection, then course placement

Brightspace onboarding is reviewed once per institution. The LMS administrator then completes a separate registration for each selected staging or production environment from the same institution console. After an environment is approved, course staff use the RFM Deep Linking picker to add an approved investigation; learners click the resulting topic and arrive in the version-pinned RFM enrollment without a course code or separate RFM login.

D2L is the company and Brightspace is the learning management system. These docs use “D2L Brightspace” on first reference and “Brightspace” afterward.
